D’Tigress Triumph
Nigeria’s
senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have emerged winners of the 2017
FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship after defeating Senegal 65-48 points in
the final. The Nigerian
ladies had an excellent run in the tournament as they came out on top from each
of the seven games they played at Bamako, Mali. They however started Sunday’s final game on a bad
note, as they lost the first quarter 12-18 points to the Senegalese. D’Tigress doubled their
efforts in the second quarter to win the period with 21-10 points advantage to
end the first half with 33-28 points.
The third
quarter was clearly dominated by the Nigeria side which recorded 15 points
against 7 for Senegal, and lastly grabbed 17 points against Senegal’s 13 points
in the fourth quarter to win the game with 65-48 points. Nigeria, who already
qualified for the FIBA World Cup in Spain when they beat hosts Mali in the
semifinal on Saturday, are now champions of the continent for the third time. The
team coach, Sam Vincent led Nigeria to win the 2003 and 2005 editions and has
now added the 2017 edition to make it his third title in the Championship.
