European
champions, Real Madrid, have retained the UEFA Super Cup after grabbing a 2-1
victory over Manchester United in Skopje, Macedonia on Tuesday. The victory
means the La Liga champions are the first club to win the Super Cup twice in a
row since AC Milan achieved it in 1990. Zinedine Zidane’s men dominated from
the start and led when Casemiro slid in a half-volley 24 minutes into the game.
They doubled their lead early into the second half when Isco calmly slotted in
from eight yards after a neat one-two with Gareth Bale.
Manchester
United pulled one back in the 67th minute as new signing, Romelu Lukaku, tapped
in to make the score 2-1. Cristiano Ronaldo, who started from the bench, came
in just eight minutes to stoppage time for Karim Benzema, and joined his side
to a deserved victory at the Macedonian capital. As it stands, only Barcelona
and AC Milan have won more Super Cup matches (five) than Real Madrid (four). And
United Boss, Jose Mourinho, becomes the first manager to lose three European
Super Cup matches, having lost it with Chelsea in 2013 and with FC Porto in
2003.
