Petroleum Tankers Drivers
(PTD) Suspends Its Strike Action
Petroleum Tankers Drivers (PTD),
a branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural gas Workers, (NUPENG)
has suspended its strike action after one day of expressing its grievance by
staying off work. The group suspended the strike action to give room for
further dialogue with the Federal Government and the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). PTD decision to resume work just after one day of
its strike action was sequel to a meeting in Abuja, called at the instance of
the NNPC group managing director, Mr. Maikanti Baru.
Meanwhile,
there are claims in some quarters that the Federal Government has begun the
process of hiking the prices of petroleum products and may likely sell the
product between N147 and N150 per litre. The federal government’s decision to
increase the price of petroleum product as learnt was tinkered on during the
meeting with the tanker drivers as a means to satisfy PTD’s demand for an
increase in transporters’ margins. National President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese,
who spoke on the suspension, said it was necessary in the interest of the
country as well as to give room for further negotiations and discussions.
