Checkout! The UNN School Annual Inter-House Sports
The Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN, was agog as parents came in their numbers to cheer their children that displayed sporting skills in colourful outfits; the event was the celebration of the annual Inter-House sports of the University Primary School.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Prof Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba who was represented by the Director Strategic Contacts, Ethics and Publication, Dr. Casimir Ani said that the annual Inter-house sports event has become a significant occasion to mould pupils who turn out to be great future sportsmen.
Prof. Ozumba said that the School management and sports board have dedicated their effort to teach the pupils, skills for self sustenance, self reliance, and help them build their self esteem in preparation for any future challenges through sports activities.
He further stated that the Inter- house sport would help enlighten the pupils on how to work better as a team, stressing that team work propel efficient speed and success in any endeavour.
Speaking at the occasion, the UNN, primary School, Chairman, Board of Governors, Prof. Catherine Oreh noted that Inter-House Sports are important parts of the school life and are renowned for being the liveliest events in the school calendar. “The sports game are among other things meant to instil into the children the spirit of sportsmanship as children learn to accept it when they lose, and rejoice when they win, and still love each other in spite of winning or losing”, she said.
 Prof. Oreh hinted that the drive of the Board of Governors is to make the University school the centre for academic and sporting excellence not just in Nigeria, but globally.
Further, she applauded the Vice-Chancellor and his management team, Alumni, parents and other sponsors stressing that without their unalloyed assistance, the event would not have been grand and colourful.
Highlights at the sports meet include a lecture delivered by a student of the University primary school, Iwuchukwu Chidiebube on the “Benefits of participating in physical activities”. She said physical activity amongst many other benefits reduces the risk of cancers, such as colon and breast cancer.
The Inter-house sport unveiled a special relay race for parents in various categories. The following parents who came first in the various categories are Mrs Nkiru Ugwuja, Mrs Ngozi Nnaji, and Mr Cosmas Okolie. They dedicated their prizes to their children, stating that they were motivated by their wards to participate in the race.
The event which featured activities such as match-past, short distance races, relay races, sack race, catching the bus, filling the basket and others, came to its zenith as the Hibiscus house emerged the best, clinching the trophy for the first position amidst five other houses with a total of eighty five points. Rose house took first in match-past but came third in the overall rating while Alamanda house were the runners-up.
