Madrid Wins La Liga Championship
Double-chasing Real Madrid won
their first La Liga title since 2012 after a final-day 2-0 victory at Malaga on
Sunday. Cristiano Ronaldo scored two minutes into the game when he latched onto
Isco’s through ball to step around Carlos Kameni and tap into an empty net. Karim
Benzema added their second goal after the break to see Real, who had only
needed a point, lift the first of a possible double this season. The Zinedine
Zidane’s men will now face Juventus in the Champions League final in Cardiff on
June 3rd as they look to lift their second trophy of the season. Zidane’s, who
has just had his first full season as Real boss, is the first manager to lead
the club to the league title since Jose Mourinho in 2012.
Meanwhile, this is also the first
season since the inception of the Catalan club, that Madrid scored in every
game from the start to the end. Second-placed Barcelona came from behind to win
SD Eibar 4-2 at Camp Nou but the win meant nothing as regards retaining the
title they won last year. Eibar went 2-0 up through two stunning Takashi Inui
strikes, before David Junca’s own goal, Luis Suarez’s finish and two goals from
Lionel Messi, who also missed a penalty, handed Barca the win.
